I just had the pleasure of looking through a brand new curriculum resource that those of you using iPads or iPods in your classroom will really like. It is called 50 App Activities for Life Skills and is written by Ashley Davis, an enthusiastic and tech savvy FACS Teacher from Minnesota. Ms. Davis highlights that electronic devices are useful in the classroom for calculating and recording data, accessing information and reference materials, and for creating something that meets a learning goal.

In the 50 Apps Activities for Life Skills resource, there is a wide variety of Apps from which to choose for implementation in your classes. This wonderful resource provides an overview of the App along with the objective(s) and directions for accessing the App. It also ties each App to the applicable AAFCS national standard. A well designed student worksheet is provided with each App. Here is a taste of some of the Apps you may enjoy for your classes:

Meal Planning

Type 1 and 2 Diabetes

Grocery List

Vitamins

Cake Decorating

Food Safety & Sanitation

Financial Literacy

Fashion

When you order and review this resource I would recommend flagging each page with a post-it note noting the class in which to implement the App to make it easy for you to access the learning activity. 50 App Activities for Life Skills (100126) is available from Learning Zone Express for $34.95. Having this resource will truly save you so much time in trying to find Apps and then designing learning activities to go with the App for your classes. Check this resource out on-line today!

Below is a FAQ document produced by the developers of the General CTE Assessment. We’ve received a great amount of interest followed by an even greater amount of questions. I’m confident the information below will answer many of those questions. I want to thank Cameron Clyne from CETE, the test developing group, for quickly pulling this information together.

Please note two corrections in the information below. In my initial email, I had stated 11th or 12th graders whether in CTE or not were eligible to take the pilot. In seeking more valid results, it was determined that 11th or 12th graders having completed at least one CTE course or currently enrolled in a fall semester CTE course would be eligible.

The assessment window has been changed from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30th to Nov. 5th through Dec. 15th.

We’re very excited about the cPass project and certainly view the General CTE assessment and the Pathway-specific assessments (still in development) as grand improvements over our current assessment system in CTE. By providing your CTE students the opportunity to take the General CTE assessment pilot, you will be exposing them to the type of rigorous assessments that will be incorporated in the near future of CTE in Kansas. Thanks for your consideration. If you are interested in joining this pilot project please email jcornejo@ksde.org with your school name, the name of the person who will coordinate and his/her email address. We need to know of your interest by end-of-business Friday, September 14th. As always, if you have any questions feel free to contact me.

cPass Pilot FAQ

The Career Pathways Assessment System (cPass) will be piloting November 5th 2012 to December 15th 2012. Over 5,000 students from across Kansas, Colorado, and Mississippi will be participating in the piloting of the new General assessment. This assessment covers academic foundations (e.g., Math, Science, English Language), as well as 21st Century Skills (e.g., leadership, team work, communications, etc.).

Who should participate in the cPass General Assessment?

When the General Assessment becomes operational, all students in Career and Technical Education (CTE) will use this assessment to test their basic academic foundations knowledge, as well as knowledge and skills that all students should know regardless of which pathway they are following.

When piloting it is highly advantageous to test students who are as comparable to the actual population as possible. When selecting students for the cPass General Assessment pilot, please only select 11th and 12th grade CTE students.

How many items are being piloted?

We will be piloting about 350 items for the General Assessment.

Each student who participates in the pilot will take 100 items that mimic the actual subject breakdown of an actual assessment.

How long will the pilot take?

cPass is intended to measure what a student knows rather than how fast they can respond, thus total test times will vary among students..

We believe most students will require no more than three hours however, we will collect data on how long it takes each student to respond to each item and use that in selecting items for the final test editions.

What kind of item types will appear on this assessment?

As with most standardized assessments, there will be various types of test items used throughout the assessment. This assessment will include multiple-choice, technology enhanced, and situational judgment item types.

What are technology enhanced item types?

Technology enhanced item types are new to computer-based educational testing. These items allow students to interact with the item in a way previously not possible.

There are various types of technology enhanced items, and an example of each kind featured in this pilot will be available before November 5th for students to experience.

What are Situational Judgment Item types?

Situational Judgment Item types are similar to a standard multiple-choice item. Each student will be given a scenario with several possible correct options. Students select the response option that most closely matches how they should react to that situation.

The big difference with these items is that there is no one correct answer. Instead, answer choices represent various degrees of correctness or sophistication. Items will be scored in a manner that allows for points even if the “best” answer is not selected.

Scoring for this item type will be determined by subject matter experts who will rank order each option to determine the point value for each response.

What testing platform will students use to participate in the pilot?

The cPass pilot will use the new Kansas Interactive Testing Engine (KITE) system. Unlike most testing systems, KITE is a thin client, which requires downloading a special secure version of the browser Firefox. Using a thin client testing engine will reduce the strain on schools’ computers.

How do we download the secure Firefox browser?

A link to the secure Firefox browser will be placed on the cPass website on October 8th 2012. The cPass website can be found at: www.careerpathways.us.

What results from the pilot will be shared with the participating schools?

Only aggregate results from the pilot will be returned to the schools. Since each student will be taking a different set of 100 items, it is difficult to provide comparable individual scores. Additionally, since one purpose of a pilot test is to weed out potentially problematic items, pilot test results such as number or percent correct do not have an easily interpretable meaning. We will make an effort to send some broad level results that should provide general information on how students in your school performed during the pilot.

Where can I get more information on cPass?

What a busy summer for KSDE CTE and FCS! We’ve had quite a few “earnest people “working for the betterment of Kansas CTE and Family and Consumer Sciences. This E-NEWSletter will include items that illustrate this work, and as always, some information will probably not apply to you, however realize there are a number of professionals who receive this, which is why the contents appear very broad. For those who are new, this E-NEWSletter will come monthly or bi-monthly as information is gathered. Only those items that are time-sensitive will be sent between them.

There are changes to the E-NEWSletter design due to some suggestions from the field. You will notice a table of contents and a limit of no more than 21 items for each. This will allow for time efficiency and retrieval of data if you archive them.

3. Legislative CTE Initiatives—From Jay Scott, Asst Director, CTE

Spring/Summer 2012 legislation has offered enhancements related to CTE. They include $1000 incentive to schools related to certifications earned, tuition reimbursement when a student leaves to attend technical classes, and transportation reimbursement to get a student to and from the post-secondary location. Watch for more information regarding how this will be implemented in Kansas and in your school.

4. Common Career and Technical Core (CCTC)

The Common Career and Technical Core document was released in June at the 2012 Career Cluster Institute in Atlanta, GA and will set the stage for career cluster updates across the nation. This is welcome update to streamline the skills needed for success in each cluster field. For Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS), this is especially enlightening as many of the newly identified ‘career ready practices’ are directly taught in our courses. Feel free to share this with your local administration and decision makers. Please refer to www.careertech.org to read them.

5. Kansas Career Pipeline

Kuder and KSDE are in partnership again for this school year to provide this web-based career development tool to Kansas schools for free. There are many updates which will be beneficial to your classroom experience and a number of trainings are available. Contact Theresa Steinlage, Kuder Field Trainer for those in your area. Her contact information is 515-822-4573 or steinlaget@kuder.com

6. Career Cluster Pathway Design Updates

As always, there are a number of updates and/or modifications to the Career Cluster Pathway Designs. These changes have been summarized on one page which is obtainable at the link below. These will take effect 2013-14, but will need to be reflected in this school years pathway maintenance. Here’s the link: http://www.ksde.org/Portals/0/Fact%20Sheet%2013-14%20pathway%20changes.pdf

7. KSDE Policy Reminders/Review—Double Up Policy

REMINDER: Double ups are allowed for any technical and application level courses in the same pathway OR if they are application level courses across the human services which includes Career and Community Connection (22250), Early Child Applications(19098), Teaching Internship (19152) and/or Teaching Internship Workplace(19198).

8. KSDE Policy Reminder/Review—Professional Learning Experiences (PLE)

REMINDER: A PLE is expected in all pathways to connect the technical skills learned and applied in an authentic industry-related experience. This will usually happen in the application level course.

A PLE can be work-based paid employment (called an internship), community-based (unpaid work but still industry experience) and/or school-based (in-school businesses or others within the school building).

BEGINNING in 2012-13, AUDITORS will ask for “work logs” or similar documents if students leave the school building to verify the experiences they are having. This would be in addition to what your local school requires for documenting their full time equivalency (FTE) attendance.

For the complete PLE toolkit, go to the KSDE website. Here is a link to the CTE Forms and Documents webpage. Click on it and then scroll down to the “Professional Learning Experiences” section. http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=1660 There is also an archived webinar and accompanying power point that will discuss how this is different from the OJT of the VE2 program era.

9. KSDE Policy Reminder/Review—Pathway Maintenance—Nov 15-Mar 15

REMINDER: Any school with an approved pathway is required to complete pathway maintenance between Nov 15 and Mar 15 to retain the approval status for the following Fall. This maintenance requires a school to look at the pathway document already in place and make edits as needed.

There are two updates that are required annually. One (1) is an updated articulation agreement that reflects the year to come (which will be for the 2013-14 school year) and the other (2) is to hold two advisory committee meetings, take notes AND upload those to show industry input and pathway improvement plans.

Other items to change through the pathway maintenance document completion include pathway courses, course titles, advisory committee members, certifications and/or assessment changes.

To ensure you have your approval notification before you leave for the school year in the spring, complete and submit your pathway maintenance document as close to November 15 as possible. In 2012, about 1600 were submitted after March lst. This means the time to review and return notification was greatly slowed and in many cases, after the form completer had left for the summer. Early submission means quicker review and notification.

10. KSDE Policy Reminder/Review—Advisory Committee Meetings

Two advisory committee meetings are required, but you can meet more if you wish to. The dates which are recognized are after March 16th one year through March 15th of the next year, however best practice is to have one in the Spring and one in the Fall. Refer to the KSDE website for more information regarding topics for discussion. The link is http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=1660 . Look for “Advisory Committee” section for the handbook.

11. FCS SURVEY from 2011-12—Complete by SEPTEMBER l, 2012 (if you haven’t already)

If you have not done so, PLEASE complete the survey about last school year’s achievements and issues. The compiled results is vital for the future assistance provided at the state and national level, and only about 140 teachers have completed it (which is half of last year and about 25% of all the FCS teachers in Kansas). REMIND OTHERS to complete it as well.

Here is the link for ALL middle level and/or secondary Family and Consumer Sciences teachers to use:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KansasFCSsurvey2011-12

12. FCCLA Survey—Plea for National Data

This fall, each affiliated chapter advisor will receive a package of surveys via mail. This will be a thick envelope which will ask for your help in administering to your schools. Some of the questions relate to student plans after high school, but some will ask about FCS and FCCLA in Kansas. This data is vitally important to our work at the state and national levels. You are encouraged to complete the survey, but national groups realize you may have some qualms with the personal information requested. First of all, you can have all students enter the school e-mail and address if they are uncomfortable answering those questions. The students may also leave any questions they wish blank.

There is also a section for you. This is just as important. Also realize, no school name or individual is identified. It’s all compiled into one large data base. You will have an option of receiving the results of your school if desired.

13. Kansas Developed Parenting Education Teaching Resource Coming!

Recently, KSDE and State of Kansas Office of Children and Families entered a partnership to bring to Kansas schools parenting education teaching resource for the FCS classroom. This resource is based upon the Balancing Work and Family curriculum of the past and the PAPA curriculum from Texas. The resource is in mid-development, but expect a webinar to discuss the pilot testing across the state in late fall. This will be called ‘Building Healthy Families in Kansas” and will entail 10 multi-day lessons. More information is coming, but it is exciting to be able to bring this to you and your use. .

14. Kansas Targeting Life Skills Middle-Level FCS Teaching Resource Updated!

Also this summer, a number of middle-level FCS teachers met to update the Targeting Life Skills curriculum from the mid-1990s. This resource will be cross walked to the 21st century skills and organized into the four subject areas of consumerism, nutrition and wellness, human relations and employability. Further, the lessons will be cross walked to current issues of today so they can be selected to address issues of your school. The issues include obesity prevention, bullying prevention, beginning consumer habits and introduction to the FCS career clusters. Watch for a pilot testing period also late fall or early winter.

15. National Family and Consumer Sciences Education Work!

As some of you are aware, I serve on a number of national organizations and committees so am aware of recent workings (I am not involved, but on their communication lines). The following is a brief update of what has happened.

White House “Let’s Move Campaign”— FCS professionals have met and shared how FCS education and FCCLA is already addressing issues of nutrition and wellness. A partnership has been discussed.

ESEA Reauthorization—FCS professionals have met with members of the Education committee to share the role FCS has in consumer and personal financial education and the development of the whole child. This is an ongoing relationship.

Perkins Reauthorization—FCS representatives are in contact with the Education committee to share the relationship FCS has to all careers and workforce success. This is an ongoing relationship.

SCED Code Update—FCS has stated the need to have our own codes rather than being lumped in as “miscellaneous”. The initial efforts were positive and more work to come. This would mean our being on an equal playing field with others who have their own code assignment.

White papers have been developed to promote the FCS education connection to current issues. These were used for many of the contacts listed here. The papers can be found at this link.

16. KANSAS FAMILY DAY—September 24th

Plan to promote this day as a way to promote our belief in strong families but also your FCS program. Refer to the following link to obtain flyers, foldable wallet cards and stickers to name a few. Many schools last year used this and a way to involve their FCCLA chapters. This link will provide access to the materials you can obtain for your classroom/school use:

 http://www.kansasfamily.com/programs/familyday/english-materials/

17. Selling FCS Education This Fall

You may not know that Northwestern University in Missouri (just over the Kansas border) lost their FCS department this summer due to lack of student enrollment. This is interesting in the fact that many Missouri schools as well as surrounding states have FCS openings every fall that go unfilled.

What are you doing to sell the profession to your students and your community? Develop a classroom display talking about the benefits of FCS education; start a career corner and begin with FCS Education, ask students to write what they like about FCS and publish them… the ideas are endless.

Points that might be helpful—FCS education are available in any state in the U.S. and many foreign countries; Guaranteed job placement; Provides personal development for own life; Makes a difference in the lives of youth; Community impact; Travel with students (as FCCLA advisor); Every day is different, Extended time off in summer months; Great communication and speaking skills; Sound background for a multitude of career (these are just examples)—personal financial planner, credit counselor, nutrition educator, test kitchen professional, grocery store nutritionist, retail manager in area related (kitchen store, children’s to adult clothing, furniture), early child related positions, interior decorator, caterer, restaurant manager, school lunch program director, non-profit organization director…the list is endless!

18. MoneySkill—A Free On-line Personal Finance Course (FCS Designed)

MoneySkills is a great on-line course that can supplement your consumer education, personal and family finance course/unit. There are both a junior high/middle and secondary level course which address many of the consumer facets that other curriculums are missing including consumer rights, purchasing food and clothing and a life simulation. It is compatible with hand held devices and includes an electronic grade book. Suzie Irvine, Executive Director of MoneySkill has a Home Economics degree in Family Financial Planning. For more information go to www.moneySKILL.org
