KATFACS News

Spring brings us energy, anticipation and in some cases the anxiety of what is to come. 2010 is proving to be a year of many asking, “What next?”. Schools are being faced with life changing decisions. I encourage everyone to continue to promote the vital importance that our programs have on our students. Take a moment and think of the reasons why you choose to be a Family and Consumer Sciences professional. If we weren’t passionate out the importance of the topics we teach we wouldn’t be in this field. Our new KSDE Family and Consumer Sciences consultant, Gayla Randel, is just as passionate about keeping our programs alive as we are. Please don’t be afraid to ask for assistance.

Registration for Summer Conference is available and I would like to encourage us as professionals to embrace this opportunity to learn. Would you be concerned if the technician fixing your car wasn’t up to date on the vehicle model? I would. It is our responsibility as professionals to continue to learn so our programs can continue to deliver well prepare students for our communities and workforce.

A few of the presenters and tours we have planned for the 2010 K-ACTE Summer Conference in addition to the KSDE program includes topics such as Child Psychiatry in 2010; The Tricks, Tips and Tools to Teaching Financial Education; Teens & Domestic Violence; Professionalism in Today’s World; Think Global, Eat Local; Student Assessments and Certifications: A Pre-PAC Medley and the annual FCCLA update. Attendees are recommended to bring their laptops for hands on learning during the Pre-PAC super session. We also have two scheduled tours planned for Tuesday afternoon that include an Early Childhood focused tour of Crème de le Crème child care facility and a Culinary focused tour of Old Overland Park which will include Penzey’s Spices, Culinary Center of KC, 10,000 Villages and The Tasteful Olive. The conference also offers opportunities to network and share ideas with fellow colleagues.
